Atlantic City to get MGM Mirage Casino
MGM Mirage announced a $4.5-$5 billion casino project to be created in Atlantic City. The finished complex will have the largest casino floor in the state. There will be 3,000 rooms for guests, a poker room, 1,500 seat theater, restaurants, spa and a convention center. The casino is being built on a 72-acre property situated next to the Borgata, which is owned by both the MGM Mirage and Boyd Gaming. "Our company has carefully considered the possibilities for our landholdings in Atlantic City. We believe the success at Borgata demonstrates the eagerness for further evolution of the nation's second-largest gaming market," said Executive Terry Lannie. MGM Mirage has made plans to break ground sometime next year and open sometime in 2012.
MGM Mirage’s plans to open a new complex will add more pressure to the already competitive environment that is Atlantic City. The Borgata’s great success since its arrival in 2003, has forced other casino properties to invest in upgrades and renovations to their facilities in order to stay competitive. For example, Donald Trump has spent $225 million over the past few years renovating the rooms in the three casinos that he owns in Atlantic City. Furthermore, he will have spent another $250 million for an addition second tower at the Taj Mahal Casino Resort.
Harrah’s $500 million dollar project is schedule to be completed next year. Their new tower was supposed to be Atlantic City’s largest casino. However, their glory was only short lived for MGM Mirage’s new hotel will eventually top it.
